Abstract painter associated with the Bay Area Figurative School and known for "Standing Male Nude in the Shower." Helped renew interest in figurative art.
He attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where he and fellow students Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff became bored with their teacher Clyfford Still's methods, planting the seeds of the Bay Area Figurative Movement.
His work was featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
He lived alone in Berkeley, California, until his death at age 49 from cancer.
He was a contemporary of the surrealist painter Roberto Matta.
