Considered one of the founders of the Chicago School of Jazz. He was also a Navy veteran and a hard bop tenor saxophone player.
He started playing saxophone as a child and, after being drafted during World War II, he returned to Chicago to play with an array of jazzmen.
He is the recipient of a NEA Jazz Masters Award.
