He went to a colonial school and later joined African Jazz, a rumba group.
He was the first chairman of the Cameroon Music Corporation.
He was born in Douala, Cameroon to parents Duala and Yabassi lineage.
His hit "Soul Makossa" served as an influence for the Michael Jackson song "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
