Jazz alto saxophonist who is a DownBeat Hall of Famer, decorated for his exceptional musical talent and his contributions to jazz.
He was taught music by his father, his godfather, and some of his their neighbors like Charlie Parker. He later played in a band with Sonny Rollins.
He was the recipient of a 2001 American Jazz Masters fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
He and his wife Dollie founded an organization in 1970 that sought to preserve African Diaspora art and culture called the Artists Collective, Inc.
He helped Edward Morgan launch his career.
