Winner of Down Beat's Trumpeter of the Year Award, as well as the BMI Composers Award.
He began playing the trumpet when he was eight years old and went on to get his music composition degree at Stanford University.
He founded his own quintet, as well as an ensemble in his own name.
He married his wife Angela in 1991 and she has acted as his manager.
He has arranged music for Carlos Santana.
