Influential jazz artist who contributed greatly to the evolution of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz, and jazz fusion.
He lived at Westbeth Artists Community after relocating to New York City in the forties.
He was an arranger for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra from 1941 until 1948.
He was born a Green, but was given his stepfather's last name Evans while he was still young.
He and Miles Davis were frequent collaborators.
