Jazz artist and arranger known for his lengthy collaboration with Woody Herman from 1951 until 1966.
He was an amateur musician in Boston and founded his own band of which jazz alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano was a member.
He and drummer Frank Capp led Juggernaut, which was popular at Los Angeles clubs and festivals such as the Malibu Arts Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival.
He married Cathy Sweeney and he had three daughters named Cher, Linda, and Robin.
He had one of his longest collaborations with the Count Basie Orchestra.
