English sculptor who became the leading portrait sculptor in Regency Britain by sculpting busts of many notable figures.
He worked as a grocer and then apprenticed as a wood carver.
He began his sculptures by making two life-sized drawings of his sitter's head, one head on and one in profile.
He married his cousin Mary Ann Wale in 1809.
He created a their statue of John Dalton.
