A Croatian translator, editor, writer, and literary critic, he received a prestigious 1971 award from the Croatian Association of Literary Translators. His literary works include essays, memoirs, and letters.
He attended school in Zagreb before studying American literature at the University of California, Berkeley.
He translated works from German, Russian, French, and English.
He was born in the village of Caglin, Croatia.
He and poet Babette Deutsch both worked as translators.
