Notable for his memoir All Over But the Shoutin, this Alabama-born writer is also their for his Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism for The New York Times.
Before joining the staff of The New York Times, he worked as a journalist in a number of different states, covering such major news stories as the Oklahoma City Bombing and the trial of Susan Smith.
He was a two-time recipient of the American Society of Newspaper Editors' Distinguished Writing Award, as well as the winner of a 1992 Nieman Fellowship.
Raised in Possum Trot, Alabama, he grew up mostly in the care of his mother.
He penned I Am a Soldier Too: The Jessica Lynch Story.
