He began learning to play chess when he was a young boy.
He was the European Rapid Champion in 2006.
He was born and raised in Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time of his birth.
He finished ahead of Viktor Korchnoi at the 2008 Pivdenny Bank Cup.
