William Drummond
Poet
Scottish poet and translator whose best-known works include Cypresse Grove and Poems. A posthumous edition of The Works of William Drummond of Hawthornden was published in 1711.
He studied at the University of Edinburgh. He published his first literary work in 1613.
He was born at Hawthornden Castle in Midlothian, Scotland, and he honored his heritage by writing under the name of "William Drummond of Hawthornden."
He was engaged to Mary Cunningham, but she died before their wedding day. Later, he married Elizabeth Logan, with whom he had nine children.
His early poems were influenced by the pastoral poetry of Sir Philip Sidney.
