U.S. Army four-star general who developed innovative artillery techniques during World War II.
He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1939 and was subsequently assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.
He developed the One Army concept and not only helped to integrate the National Guard and the Reserve into the core army, but also pushed to end the draft.
He had a son and a daughter with his wife, Barbara.
He served as Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Peter Schoomaker, another four-star general, served as the Chief of Staff.
