William Westmoreland
War Hero
Military leader who served as commander of U.S. troops in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968.
He commanded artillery battalions in North Africa in World War II and went on to head the elite 101st Airborne Division during the 1950s.
He oversaw a massive expansion of the Vietnam War, which, at its peak, involved more than 500,000 troops.
He had three children with his wife, Katherine Van Deus.
He owed a debt of gratitude to fellow general, Frederick C. Weyand , whose timely warning helped him to push back the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive.
