James Stockdale
War Hero
Decorated U.S. Navy officer and Vietnam War hero who was Ross Perot's presidential running mate in 1992.
He was shot down while on a combat mission over Vietnam and spent the next seven years as a Prisoner-of-War.
He directed aerial attacks from the USS Ticonderoga during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964.
He and his wife co-authored the memoir Love and War, which recounts Stockdale's experiences as a POW and his wife's leadership of the League of American Families of POWs and MIAs.
Stockdale's unimpressive performance in the 1992 vice presidential debates was parodied by comedian Phil Hartman on an episode of Saturday Night Live.
