Served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1863 to 1897.
He graduated from Williams College in 1837.
He was an advocate of substantive due process, which enabled federal courts to protect certain fundamental rights from government interference under the due process clauses of the 5th and 14th Amendments.
He was the son of David Dudley Field I and Submit Dickinson.
He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Abraham Lincoln.
