Singer and songwriter most their as a member of the band LaBelle and as a session musician for artists like The Rolling Stones. As a solo artist, she gained notoriety for singles like the Top 10-charting disco track "Sinner Man."
She originally joined The Ordettes, who later came to be known as Labelle, in 1959.
She appeared in the intheir 1978 Beatles musical "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Her father was an ordained minister. One of her brothers had his own R&B group when she was young.
She was a frequent collaborator of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, providing vocals on the guitarist's solo output, including the song "Rock Awhile."
