British Labour Party politician and economist who has been a member of Parliament for Bolton West and served in such positions as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
She earned a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree from Queen's College, Oxford University and went on to obtain her master's degree from the London School of Economics.
Before beginning her political career, she worked for the Bank of England and wrote economics-themed articles for The Guardian.
She spent her earliest years in Limavady, Northern Ireland, and the remainder of her childhood in England and Ireland. She is the granddaughter of Irish War of Independence fighter Philip Murphy; the wife of Derek John Gadd; and the mother of four children.
She held many of her governmental positions under the prime ministerial administration of fellow Labour Party politician Tony Blair.
