He used to do voice work on the radio and promoted his brother's fashion company.
He wasn't happy with acting, so he began producing such hits as The Godfather in 1972 and Rosemary's Baby in 1968.
He was married seven times: to Sharon Hugueny (1961), then to Camilla Sparv (1963), then to Ali MacGraw (1969), then to Phyllis George (1977), then to Catherine Oxenberg (1998), then to Leslie Ann Woodward (2002), and then to Victoria White (2005). His son is producer Josh Evans.
He collaborated on Chinatown with Jack Nicholson.
