Robert Hugo Dunlap
War Hero
United States Marine who received the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart for his actions in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. During the battle, he crawled more than 200 yards in the face of heavy Japanese gunfire and returned to relay key information to his superiors.
He was a football player and track star at Monmouth College in Illinois.
Just one week after the events which earned him the Medal of Honor, he was shot in the hip, requiring him to be hospitalized for fourteen months.
He was survived by his wife, Mary, and two children.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor by U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
