John Brown
War Hero
Connecticut-born abolitionist who led armed anti-slavery raids in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
He studied to become a Congregationalist minister; however, he soon ran out of money and was forced to work at his father's tannery.
He believed that violent action was the only way to bring an end to slavery.
He married Dianthe Lusk in 1820.
He and Frederick Douglass were fellow abolitionists.
