Richard Heck
Chemist
American chemist who is best known for the discovery and development of the Heck reaction. He helped develop the mechanism of alkene hydroformylation, which is used to produce about 15 billion pounds of alcohols and aldehydes annually.
He earned his doctor of philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1954, after receiving his bachelor's degree there two years before.
He won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010 for his work in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions in organic synthesis.
He retired in the Philippines.
He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry two years before Brian Kobilka did.
