Victorian-era painter known for his supernatural subjects, such as faeries, and for his obsessive attention to detail. His watercolor "The Artist's Halt in the Desert" was thought lost until "Antiques Roadshow" host Peter Nahum discovered it in 1987.

Before Fame

He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts at age twenty. He received the medal for life drawing in 1840.

Trivia

He suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was committed to a London insane asylum, where he created many of his most acclaimed works.

Family Life

He was the son of a chemist.

Associated With

His painting, "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke," inspired Freddie Mercury and Queen to record a song of the same name.
