Varvara Stepanova
Painter
Twentieth-century Russian abstract artist associated with the Constructivist movement. She and her fellow Constructivist artists rejected traditional art in favor of posters, photographs, propaganda, and graphic design.
She studied with painter Jean Metzinger at the Academie de La Palette in Paris, France.
She designed sets for several Moscow theatrical productions.
She was born into a Russian peasant family but was able to escape her humble origins through her studies at the Kazan Art School.
She collaborated throughout her life with her artistic contemporary and friend, Alexander Rodchenko.
