Avid hockey fan and CEO of the Compuware Corporation. He used his fortune from the company to purchase the Carolina Hurricanes, the Plymouth Whalers, and the Florida Everblades.
Shortly after graduating from Wayne State University, he, Allen Cutting, and Thomas Thewes founded Compuware.
He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
A philanthropist as well as a hockey team owner, he donated to the Michigan Cancer Foundation, which was renamed the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in memory of his first wife.
He and National Football League executive Jerry Jones both owned major athletic teams.
