He worked evenings in the chorus of music hall revues. In the 1930s, he played roles in musical theater productions and entertained at nightclubs.
His film, Les Diabolique, was one of the earliest French films to be widely-distributed in English-speaking countries.
He got married in 1942, 1951, and 1960.
He met French singing legend Edith Piaf in 1939 and they dated for a short time.
