At age 17 he started repairing ships owned by his uncle, and by age 23 he had command of his own steamboat.
He charted over 100,000 miles of the arctic, more than any previous arctic expedition.
His brother-in-law, Johan Vaaler, is often falsely credited with inventing the paper clip.
Thor Heyerdahl is another well-known Norwegian explorer.
