Henry Walter Bates
Explorer
Naturalist who traversed the Amazon rainforest and noted animal mimicry.
He accompanied the expedition of Alfred Russel Wallace, his mentor and teacher, to the tropics.
By recording the different ways rainforest animals and insects imitated other life forms or inanimate objects, he lent further support to the theory of evolution.
He was born in Leicester into a middle class family.
One of the goals of his journey was to find evidence for Charles Darwin theory on the origin of species.
