Oton Ivekovic
Painter
Painter who incorporated historical and religious themes into his work. His works became the means by which Croatians were able to visualize their heritage.
He studied at the Vienna Academy of Painting, where he became known for his spats with teachers. He trained under Christian Griepenkerl, Josef Matyáš Trenkwald, and August Eisenmenger.
He taught at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts.
His family was unable to afford to send him to the Art Academy early on, so he was first tutored by Ferdo Quiquerez. He spent the last year of his life in his hometown and in the company of his brother Cyril.
He and Ivan Rein were fellow Croatian painters.
