Mato Celestin Medovic
Painter
Early Croatian modernist artist whose paintings often depicted historical scenes. He also painted landscapes and seascapes of his native Dalmatia.
He was ordained by the Catholic Church in 1874 after training to become a priest in the Dubrovnik Franciscan Seminary. His name became Celestin following his ordination.
His graduation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich prompted him to abandon the priesthood for a life of full-time painting.
He was born into a peasant family.
He and fellow Croatian painter Oton Ivekovic both created historically themed artwork.
