She began surfing at a young age, and began competing when she was 14.
She decided to leave school and compete full-time after winning two WQS 6stars.
She is from Victoria Bay, South Africa, and has brothers.
Carissa Moore bested her at the 2020 Summer Olympics; in their shortboard competition, Moore won gold, while Buitendag won silver.
