Working in punk and funk in her early days, she went solo rapping in London nightclubs.
She was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1990, but lost to Milli Vanilli. The winning duo then had their award revoked due to a lip-syncing scandal.
She was born in Stockholm, Sweden, raised by her adoptive father Don Cherry, an American jazz musician, and her mother, a painter and visual artist. She has three children who all became musicians in their own right, Mabel, Naima and Tyson.
She released a hit duet with Michael Stipe called "Trout," which became a mainstay on college radio stations.
