Socio-political activist and lead singer for the alternative rock group R.E.M., best known for such hits as "Losing my Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "It's the End of the World as We Know it (And I Feel Fine)."
He worked at a Waffle House before enrolling at the University of Georgia. He was an art major.
He wrote all the lyrics to R.E.M.'s highly successful albums Automatic for the People (1992) and Out of Time (1991).
He was in a relationship with novelist Douglas A. Martin in 1999. He later began a relationship with photographer Thomas Dozol.
He and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain had plans to work on a project together before Cobain's death.
