Originally founded in 1951 as a college of the University of New South Wales, the school was ranked in 2015 by Times Higher Education as number 2 in Australia and number 30 in the world for universities under 50 years of age.

The Medical School implemented the problem-based learning system which was later mandated for use by the Australian Medical Council throughout Australia.
