U.S. Air Force Colonel-turned-NASA astronaut who first served on Space Shuttle Atlantis' STS-125 Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission.
He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Notre Dame during the early 1980s.
He and Richard Mullane were the first (and, as of the turn of the 21st century, only) U.S. Air Force navigators to be chosen by NASA to train as astronauts.
He and his wife, Joan Dickinson, settled in Colorado Springs with their three children.
He and fellow astronaut, Garrett Reisman, both served on the STS-132 Space Shuttle Atlantis mission.
