Command module pilot for Apollo 14, the third mission to land astronauts on the moon.
He was a smokejumper with the U.S. Forest Service before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1953.
He conducted experiments in the moon's orbit while his fellow Apollo 14 crew members walked on the surface below.
He had four children with his wife Joan.
He was portrayed by George Newbern in the TV mini-series From the Earth to the Moon.
