He began leading worship at the Soul Survivor Church, eventually growing it into what became the Soul Survivor festivals.
He won the 2005 Dove Award for Worship Song of the Year for Blessed Be Your Name and authored many books on Christian worship.
He was born in Watford, England. He and his wife Beth had five children. He and his wife were two of the founders of the Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
His songs were performed by such notable CCM artists as Matt Maher, Michael W. Smith, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, and Chris Tomlin.
