Mahonri Young
Sculptor
Sculptor and artist whose best-known works included the "Seagull" and "This Is The Place" monuments in Salt Lake City.
He financed his education at the the Art Students League of New York and the Académie Julian in France by working as an engraver for newspapers.
He was a member of the Ashcan School and, as such, created artwork depicting gritty, urban scenes. He sometimes returned to his roots and sculpted statues of his their grandfather and other Mormon pioneers.
