Stewart Udall
Politician
Arizona congressman from 1955 to 1961 who was also the Secretary of the Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. His term as Secretary of the Interior saw the creation of numerous national parks, monuments, historical sites, and wildlife refuges. He also worked tirelessly to enact various environmental and conservation laws.
He left the University of Arizona to join the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After the war, he returned to school and received his law degree.
As a school board member, he helped desegregate the Amphitheater School District in Arizona.
His marriage to Ermalee Webb produced six children.
He led the first national conversation on the preservation of nature since the administration of Theodore Roosevelt.
