The American author of more than thirty works of fiction and non-fiction, he is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning 1926 novel, Early Autumn. His other popular works include A Modern Hero (1932) and The Rains Came (1937).

Before Fame

Ending his studies at the outbreak of World War I, he volunteered for the Foreign Service and drove combat ambulances in France.

Trivia

Many of his novels, including Green Bay Tree, Early Autumn, and A Good Woman, deal with the theme of individuals trying to defy family and tradition.

Family Life

He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and was the son of Charles and Mary Bromfield.
