Peyton Conway March
War Hero
Leader of U.S. Army forces in Germany during World War I. He also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War and won numerous military honors, including the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Medal.
He served in the years before World War I as an observer with the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Russo-Japanese War.
During his time as U.S. Army Chief of Staff, he re-organized the Army to include an Air Corps. The Army Air Corps later developed into the United States Air Force.
His father, Francis Andrew March, is considered the father of modern linguistics.
He and General Matthew Ridgeway both organized United States and Allied troops during World War I.
