He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age twenty-seven, making him an older-than-average recruit.
He returned to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio following his 1945 retirement from the military.
He served as Master Gunnery Sergeant under Franklin D. Roosevelt.
