He became fascinated with Chinese culture in his youth and studied with a Buddhist monk and a Chinese poet.
He helped to establish trade routes between Asia and Europe.
He was the grandson of Genghis Khan.
Khan's garden at Xanadu (in Mongolia) became the subject of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's their poem "Kubla Khan."
