He worked as a boom operator for Television New Zealand.
He co-founded Flying Fish, a production company that specialized in commercials, in 1986. One of their ads won Commercial of the Decade.
His father's family were natives of Maori.
He scored a box office hit with Die Another Day, starring Pierce Brosnan as James Bond.
