He directed the controversial film The Devils, which topped the British box office for eight weeks.
He married Shirley Russel in 1956; Vivian Jolly in 1983; Hetty Baynes in 1992; and Lisi Tribble in 2001.
He worked with Tina Turner on Tommy.
