Known for Don't Rain on My Parade, Let It Snow!, Time After Time, and several Broadway musicals.
He took piano lessons at a young age. He attended the Chicago Musical College and was commissioned by future film producer Mike Todd to write a song for a Todd-created musical act.
He wrote the scores for such musicals as High Button Shoes, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Peter Pan, Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Hallelujah, Baby!, which won a Tony. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.
He married second wife Margaret in 1962.
His song Time After Time was covered by many artists, including Frank Sinatra.
