Singing labor activist with the radical International Workers of the World who was convicted of murder in a controversial trial.
He composed songs like The Preacher and the Slave and The Tramp with the IWW, using them to organize camp laborers.
He showed up to a local doctor with a gunshot wound the same day a store owner and his son were shot dead. His red bandana linked him to the crime.
He was born in Gävle, Sweden.
His story inspired the song Joe Hill, performed later by Pete Seeger among others.
