Classically trained musician who was heralded as one of the top jazz pianists of her day.
She received her classical training from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, beginning at age seven.
She was nominated for at least three Grammy Awards and was presented with a Fellowship for composition from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
Her family recognized her talent early on; she started piano lessons when she was four.
She was in her teens when she joined PhillyJoe Jones' quintet.
