Award-winning director of artistic Hollywood films like Harold and Maude and Being There.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for film editing in 1967 for his work on The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming and the following year won for In the Heat of the Night.
He spent 18 years as a director, the last eight of which came outside the Hollywood studio system with films like The Last Detail winning the Palme D'or at Cannes.
His parents' divorce and his father's subsequent suicide led him to drop out of high school.
His 1978 Vietnam War drama Coming Home starring Jon Voight was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director.
