He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and began directing music videos.
He directed the iconic music video for R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion, which won the Best Video of the Year award at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
His father was an aircraft engineer.
His surreal horror film The Cell featured pop star Jennifer Lopez in the lead role.
